A guest post by Anton, director and producer of 100 Man Fight I am lucky enough to be staying for a month with Chris and his wonderful girlfriend in their house in Akasaka. Stacked up against just about anyone else I would have to be the closest thing to the perfect guinea pig for the Blue Belt Life diet. A lifelong rampant alcoholic and consumer of excessive amounts of meat, caffeine, salt and sugar in various forms I truly wonder what effect a vegetarian, alcohol free diet would have on me. Hopefully not the massive coronary my father claims is waiting for him should he ever deviate from his diet…
Modern challenges During most of the evolution of our species, our problem was one of too few food sources, and too few calories. We countered this by devoting most of our energy and time toward obtaining food – hunting, gathering, and later farming. Very recently in our evolutionary history, the challenges have shifted – now we face too many food sources, and an over abundance of calories. We do not need to expend much time or energy to obtain food, so most of us simply fill our free time with popular television, facebook, or other pursuits. This is a mistake – it now makes sense to devote a significant amount…
Having just returned from the United States I feel compelled to address something that is completely out of control. My country is diseased physiologically, so it is only natural that psychological degradation will follow. The topic of diet has been beaten to death in recent years with the emergence of the paleo/primal/ancestral dietary theories. For whatever reason, people in the rich Western world just recently have developed an intense interest in diet. One can only hope that this translates into positive actions across the population. My dietary journey began in early 2013 just as I made the final decision to leave the life of security. I knew that in making…
10. It has no place on my present/future path in life My chosen path in life is a long one. In fact, it is infinite, though my time here will be limited to a handful of years, at most. Already, to get out all of the music that has emerged in my head to date, would take me longer than the rest of my life. This is admittedly by choice – I could give up everything else, hole myself up like the late Gabriel García Márquez, and get it out in a couple years or so. But I want to cook, to write, to teach, to make a family. These…
“I’m in the dark here. You understand? I’m in the dark!” – Lt Col Frank Slade – Predictably, after a period of euphoria, a dip occurs to maintain balance in the universe. So it has been for my stint outside the traditional workforce. What do I have to show for my four months: a few half-finished songs… a blog post? The music is “flowing like mud around here”, as Frank Slade from Scent of a Woman might say. Even when working a desk 60 hours a week I was producing music at that pace – and I wrote a book. I slept and saw friends just as little. What…
“Keep me searching for a heart of gold, and I’m getting old.” – Neil Young – In Black Swan, one of my favorite books on human nature and the markets, Nassim Taleb says “Quit your high paying job”, so I did. Ever since I gave up religion after reading Atlas Shrugged I have been one to make serious life changes based on reading material that resonates with me. Before reading Black Swan I read How to Get Rich by Felix Dennis, and that really got me started on the path toward premature retirement. In it, Dennis challenges readers to consider carefully if they truly want vast wealth. In doing that…
